Alternatives

The Official Website for the Hartford East Bus Rapid Transit Feasibility Study

The study alternatives to be considered in this evaluation will consist of the following:

1. Draft High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) Alternative Operating Concept

The HOV Alternative would consist of the construction of transit stations along the I-84 and I-384 HOV lanes, and ramp connections between those stations and the HOV lanes. Local bus services would be reconfigured to make greater use of the HOV lanes and to improve local services.

2.  Draft Rail Corridor Alternative Operating Concept

Under this alternative, the busway would be located along two rights-of-way in Manchester and East Hartford: 1) The Connecticut Southern Rail Line between Depot Square in Manchester and the Connecticut River; and 2) The old Manchester Spur, including a short extension to Hartford Road.

Between East Hartford and Hartford, the busway would cross the Connecticut River. The busway would then continue next to the rail line to Moody Street with busway connection to the vicinity of Main Street and Albany Avenue just north of downtown Hartford.

There would also be a direct connection to the busway from I-84 so that express bus routes from the east could use the busway to Hartford. Local bus services would be revised to take advantage of the busway, and I-84 express services would operate in the busway between a new station at the intersection of I-84 and the rail corridor and downtown Hartford.

3. Draft HOV/Rail Corridor Hybrid Alternative Operating Concept -

The Hybrid Alternative combines elements of the HOV and Rail Corridor alternatives in a manner that should reduce capital costs while maintaining the most attractive service benefits of those alternatives.

The Hybrid Alternative would consist of the construction of a busway within the Connecticut Southern Railroad (CSO) corridor (but not along the Manchester Industrial Spur), and the construction of busway stations. Many local bus services would be configured to use the busway, and I-84 express services would operate in the busway between a new station at the intersection of I-84 and the rail corridor and East Hartford.

In addition, the Hybrid Alternative would include a Manchester transportation center (called Manchester Station) that would provide connections between I-384 express service, local routes, and the busway corridor.
